Book Review – Our Iceberg is Melting
In today’s fiercely competitive and ever changing world, change management has become one of the most crucial challenges. In recent times, much has been said and many books have been written on this topic. But one book that takes a look at change management through a fresh perspective is ‘Our Iceberg Is Melting’.
‘Our Iceberg Is Melting’ is a parable in a business book that has taken a complex issue like change management and distilled it down into a simple story for all to understand. Written by John Kotter, a Harvard professor and Holger Rathgeber, a business manager, this book does more than just talk about change. An amusing and charming story that has creatively shown eight effective ways to bring positive change to any situation through the life of Fred, a young inexperienced penguin.
The story here is about a colony of penguins and how they deal with the impending disaster of melting iceberg on which they have been living for ages. As the story unfolds, under the leadership of one particularly astute penguin, a small team of penguins implement a thoughtful plan for coaxing the other birds in their colony through a time of necessary but wrenching change. Like in the human society, the story has many players – right from the intellectual and the inquisitive to the leader, the implementer, the sceptic and the follower. This book does a unique job of showing that most problems, be it personal or business, under any condition can be solved with the right strategy in place and that everyone in a group must play a role in navigating change.
A short and easy read written in simple language, ‘Our Iceberg Is Melting’ is both enjoyable and inspiring. A must read for any organisation that’s hit by the challenge of changing and orienting people towards expected performances.
